When choosing a battery for your solar system, you'll encounter terms like kWh, Ah, and DoD. Here's what they mean:
Kilowatt-hour (kWh) This is the total energy a battery can store. A 5kWh battery can power a 500W load for 10 hours.
Amp-hour (Ah) This measures charge capacity. Multiply Ah by voltage to get kWh: 200Ah × 12V = 2.4kWh.
Depth of Discharge (DoD) This is how much of the battery's capacity you can safely use. Lithium batteries typically allow 80–100% DoD, while lead-acid allows 50%.
Cycle Life The number of charge/discharge cycles before capacity drops below 80%. Lithium batteries offer 4000–6000 cycles vs 500–1200 for lead-acid.
